Like most children, I enjoyed drawing and painting, I found it fun and fulfilling. I never considered myself particularly gifted so I was somewhat surprised when my Secondary School Art teacher encouraged me to take art more seriously. Under his guidance and tutelage my ability to draw and paint took off, as did my self confidence.
In 1970 I successfully passed an A level in Art and Art History and secured a place at the Eastbourne College of Art and Design. I think in hindsight, my choice of studying illustration and graphic design was a poor decision. It certainly taught me the importance of being precise, paying close attention to detail, understanding perspective, anatomy, colour and tonal values and meeting deadlines. All vital components of a commercial artist but felt my imagination and creativity were being quashed. The disciplined and demanding but somewhat uninspiring course slowly drained any passion for art that I had. Disillusioned with the second year of my degree, I left to pursue an alternative career.
For the next forty years I devoted my life to being a Social Worker, a demanding profession that left very little time to satisfy my artistic tendencies. I did however, sometimes wonder what might have been if I had stuck with my first love, Art.
I retired around three years ago. During the preceding forty years I hardly picked up a paint brush other than for DIY purposes, almost afraid that I might have lost whatever flair I once had. I was certainly rusty to begin with, but my latent skills gradually re-emerged. Freed from the constraints of trying to be a commercial artist, I could produce whatever I wanted to. I find myself predominantly attracted to seascapes. There is so much scope, drama and changes of light that the subject is inexhaustible. I also love to Pen Sketch and create many pictures of Cornish harbours.
Most of my work centres around Cornwall where I live but some paintings feature other parts of England where I have past connections or affection for.
